why are white men still making decisions about women's bodies?

Honey girl is my free space and I did say I wanted to share anything/everything w you. I know that now a days people tend to overlook or roll their eyes when others start posting about particular social issues. I don’t like to share lots especially when it comes to politics or religion. But this one I simply can’t wrap my head around and I wanted to write about it today.

I think most people do not even realise the gravity of what just happened… Simply because we are lucky and not affected. But Alabama today, who knows what could happen tomorrow? There is a disconnect – some waves on our social media, lunch topic with coworkers, just the New York Times article you read on your commute home. But it’s fucking real and disheartening and horrific and disappointing. I’ve never felt so lucky to live where I live and to be a Canadian. The U.S is our neighbour and I still can’t fucking believe what happened this week. This isn’t feminism vs patriarchy, pro life vs pro choice. This is basic fundamental human rights. This is pure stupidity.

If you’re still reading this and thinking what is Dove even talking about rn? You should probably go read the news or something.

This week, 25 men in Alabama passed a law that makes abortion illegal and punishable by up to 99 years in prison even in the case of rape. Denying millions of women a fundamental right to govern their own bodies and choose their own stories. I was horrified when I learned about this and it took me some time to process. A quick episode of Handmaid’s tale flashed through my mind and I kept thinking about my mum. These men in power are imposing their wills onto the bodies of women in order to uphold the white patriarchy by preventing women of low economic opportunity the right to choose not to reproduce. The states trying to ban abortion are the ones with the highest proportion of black women living there so inevitably there’s racism and discrimination behind their decision. This is about class and race as much as it is about our body our choice. It is honestly sickening to even think about.

Why are white men still making decisions about women’s bodies. *Why are any men still making decisions about women’s bodies? I’m sorry do you take birth control everyday? Are you able to get pregnant and carry a human to term? Do you have breasts? Do you know what it feels like to be scared of walking to your car alone after work at night? Scratch that. Do you know what it feels like to be scared of absolutely fucking everything. Walking around in pairs, guarding your drink with your life, running to your car at night, running to your home at night, being scared of your uber driver, being scared that if you do get attacked – you will be forced to carry a baby that will without a doubt flip your life upside down. Because now these women in America don’t have a choice, an option, the right, the freedom. 25 idiots sat around a table and seriously considered all their loved ones: their mothers, their wives, their sisters and daughters. They abused their power (like most politicians do) and decided “hey let’s fuck over all of the women in our state today”.

New rule: If you ban abortion before you ban military style assault rifles that massacre children in schools, you have lost your right to call yourself “pro life”. Make no mistake cause a state that criminalizes abortion but ranks 50th in public education doesn’t give a shit about their children. You best believe that 1 in 4 women have had an abortion. You have no idea. You don’t know their story. It’s none of your business really. Many people think they don’t know someone who has but trust me you do. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. All I wanna say is purely men shouldn’t be making laws about WOMEN’S BODIES. Fuck Alabama.

Love,
Davina
