how to keep long lasting friendships w edyta

Hi everyone I hope you're all doing well and staying at home safe w your family. It's a weird time in the world right now but we can all 100% play our part. It's time like this when we're all stuck at home unable to access the real world, go outside, do things, see people that you can reflect and gain some perspective on what's really important to you. Good health and good relationships! It also doesn't hurt to take some time to do the things you want to do when you're usually busy. The virus seriously sucks but it's like the universe is shouting at us to slow down and give us a reminder of what's truly special in all our lives.

Today I wrote a piece with my best friend Deet which is really special to me and I've wanted to do for awhile now. If you know me well then you know that one of the most important things to me are my friendships and relationships. I'm a loyal person at heart and when we become good friends, it feels like a forever thing. Deet and I have been inseparable since we became close back in middle school. She's creative like me, always there for me, kind, caring, smart, talented and everything in between. I asked Deet what her thoughts were on keeping such a long lasting friendship (10 years and counting to be exact here).

Love,
Dove + Deet

Describe yourself. What are your interests and inspirations?
I’m 22 now, recently graduated and got my Bachelors of Architectural Studies from Carleton. Since then I’ve decided to take a year break and gain some work experience, and I have applied for the masters program for September. I loved my experience studying architecture during my undergrad, especially meeting all the amazing people in that program. Aside from architecture I love being creative in general. This includes painting, drawing, and just making things for fun. I think travelling is probably one of my biggest inspirations - there’s really no better way to learn more about yourself and the world. Also seeing what my friends and other people around me are doing always inspires me to do new things. And lastly I love playing sports for fun, soccer has been my favourite for many years now but I also like volleyball, badminton and ultimate.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
This is a big question haha. But my goals as of right now would be that I will be a licensed architect, maybe move to a different city and have my own practice or business. I want to travel as much as I can especially to go to Europe and Asia. To keep it short and sweet, I just want to be happy and do all the things that I love. Also, I can’t wait to see what all my friends are up to!

What are a couple favourite things you can’t live live without?
Food. Family & friends. (love how she said food first typical deet)
But more specific essentials would be my electric toothbrush (lol what a loser), music, my phone, avocados, and lip balm.

Where is the best place you’ve travelled? And why?
Probably no surprise but Australia. Easily because it’s the longest time I’ve lived in a different place. Adelaide, the city I lived in was a great size and just super comfortable and home-y. The location was also just the best and it was super easy to get out of the city and explore. I love the warmer weather and the beaches to the west were only about 10km away or so. I have so many good memories from there and I really miss it. I will definitely need to plan a trip back soon!

We have been friends for 10 years now. What do you think is key to maintaining a long lasting friendship?
Pretty simple I think. Just find people you really connect with and who share similar interests and ambitions. And when you find your people keep them close, hangout, spend time together, and make plans to see them every so often even when everyone is busy doing their own things. Apart from that keeping in touch by texting and calling is also so important. And don’t waste time on people that negatively affect you or cause a lot of drama.

What are your 3 best tips for being a good friend?
  1. Make time for your friends
  2. Check in on your friends
  3. Be a genuine and honest person... and tell your friends you love them :)
